Celebrating Benedictine's 114th Commencement

Benedictine College Prep graduates 62 Cadets and honors the Class of 1976

As the spirited crowd settled into the last available seats in the McMurtrie-Reynolds Pavilion on the morning of May 28, the Benedictine Pipe and Drum Band kicked off the 114th Annual Commencement with a rousing version of “Processional to Highland Cathedral.” Members of the Class of '76 celebrating their 50th reunion were given the honor to enter first, followed by the faculty and staff, and then the big moment arrived – the entry of the graduating class of 2026.

Several notable speakers delivered addresses during the ceremony, including Vice President of Mission Del Smith IV '01, Head of School Greg Lilly, and President of the Benedictine Schools of Richmond Jesse Grapes. Also speaking were Valedictorian Aidan Cogswell, Salutatorian James Addison, and a representative of the class of '76, Mr. Thomas Lukish.

After the conferring of diplomas, valedictorian Cogswell delivered his speech, Head of School Greg Lilly offered heartfelt closing remarks, and the Benedictine Schola sang a beautiful version of “The Parting Glass.” Abbot Placid D. Solari, O.S.B. ’70 then gave the Benediction. This led to the Dismissal of the Class of 2026.

For the conclusion of the Commencement Exercises, the class of 2026 formed a circle in the middle of the floor, excited for the traditional spinning of the plate to signify the end of their journey at BCP. Class President Sean Marshall set the plate in motion. And when the plate stopped spinning, covers were thrown into the air in jubilation, and the brotherhood clasped each other in hugs and handshakes, before being joined by congratulatory friends and family.

The Class of 2026 consists of 62 Cadets who were accepted into 86 different colleges and universities, including University of Notre Dame, University of Virginia, Virginia Military Institute, and William & Mary.

Congratulations, Class of 2026!
