  • What financial aid options are available, including scholarship opportunities?

There are a variety of funding opportunities available at Benedictine Schools of Richmond, from need-based aid to competitive scholarships, with over $3.4 million awarded annually. Incoming students have several opportunities to receive funding upon acceptance. All families are encouraged to complete the FACTS application, which is used to determine eligibility for need based aid as well as several internal scholarship funds. Additionally, several merit and academic scholarships are available through a separate application process. Please review our scholarships page for details about each. We also encourage families to apply for local scholarships, which may be available through your church or parish. On average, 65% of our students receive financial aid and/or scholarships.
  • Will applying for tuition assistance have an effect on the admissions decision for my child?

No. All admissions decisions are made without regard to financial status, and we encourage students from all financial backgrounds to apply. With our robust tuition assistance program, we hope to make a BSoR education as affordable as possible. For more information about financial aid and scholarships, visit Affording BSoR.

We’d love to have you on campus to explore our campus and even meet a few teachers and students. Details coming August 2026.
  • How can I prepare for the personal interview?

Don’t stress about the interview. The personal interview is simply a conversation where our admissions team wants to get the applicant better. Applicants will be asked several questions regarding their applications and their interest in our schools. This is also a great opportunity for applicants to ask us questions. The interview is informal and relaxed; it’s simply a way for us to get to know each other better
  • When will I find out if my child has been accepted to BSoR?

The first round of acceptances are sent the first week of March. However, after the initial application deadline in January, we will continue to accept applications and issue admissions acceptances on a rolling basis, as space is available.

BSoR students matriculate from a variety of schools and areas across Central Virginia. A vast majority come from the local parochial schools and public middle schools; however, some students transfer from other private and public schools.

School Life FAQs

List of 19 frequently asked questions.

  • Is there a dress code?

Yes. Students at Saint Gertrude and Benedictine are both required to wear a uniform.
  • Do I have to be Catholic to attend?

The Benedictine Schools of Richmond prides itself on fostering an environment in which young men and women can mature in their faith with support from our community. However, admission to our schools is open to students of all faith backgrounds, and only 63% of our current students are Catholic.
  • What is the student-to-teacher ratio? What is the average class size?

BCP offers a student-to-teacher ratio of 8:1 and an average class size of 14. SGHS offers a student-to teacher ratio of 7:1 and an average class size of 16.
  • Is there a lunch program?

Yes. BSoR has partnered with a local catering company to provide daily lunch offerings. Meals are paid for in advance through an online ordering system.
  • What is the technology policy at each school?

Cell phone use is prohibited during school hours at Benedictine and Saint Gertrude. Students are not permitted to carry their phones during school hours, whether or not they are turned on.

Laptop guidelines are set to best support each school’s curriculum. Cadets may borrow school laptops through the library for classwork at teachers’ discretion. There is also a computer lab on campus that students may use for online assignments. Cadets are not permitted personal laptops at school. At Saint Gertrude, each student is required to bring their own personal laptop to school with them for daily classwork and assignments.
  • Is there a community service program or requirement?

While community service is a requirement of our students at both schools, it is also an inherent part of both schools' missions. Forty service hours are required for graduation from SGHS; sixty hours are needed for BCP students.
  • Do you offer individualized learning and differentiated instruction?

Benedictine and Saint Gertrude provide challenging academic experiences while providing the necessary support to meet the learning needs of all students. The Student Support Team is designed to maintain the dignity and uniqueness of each individual with a diagnosed learning difference, and our learning support specialist provides a place for the students to attain various skills such as study techniques, time management, organizational strategies, and goal planning.
  • What is the structure of BCP's First Year Orientation?

New cadets are welcomed into the Benedictine brotherhood through an orientation program that promotes bonding, teamwork, humility, discipline, and camaraderie. The 9-week onboarding program is run by 15-20 senior officers and supervised by our military staff “cadre.” Students engage in physical training exercises, team-building activities, and character-shaping games as they get to know one another and the day-to-day operations of their new school. Specific challenges range from pushups and burpees to light-hearted tasks such as caring for pet rocks. Activities conclude with a “finale” the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Please note: There is a zero-tolerance policy for physical contact or anything sexual in nature. No belittling or singling out of freshmen will be permitted. Seniors may have privileges taken away if the cadre feels they are abusing their authority.
  • What is the finale of BCP's First Year Orientation?

The finale is a 72-hour event in which freshmen officially become “cadets.” The event is held off campus over a weekend at Camp Brady Saunders. The location’s facilities provide the backdrop for a variety of physical training (PT) exercises. The weekend is conducted by Senior Officers and cadre. Freshmen will perform a number of team building exercises and PT challenges while getting little sleep. The weekend culminates with a quiz on cadet life, followed by congratulations from the Senior Officers.

Parents may not attend the finale. Freshmen will have one brief opportunity to call home. Cell phone access will not be permitted the rest of the weekend. However, when the newly christened cadets return to campus, they will participate in an annual Individual Drill Competition, where they may demonstrate their new rifle drill skills for the Corps, family, and friends.
  • What colleges do BCP and SGHS graduates attend?

Graduates of the Benedictine Schools of Richmond attend a variety of colleges based on the needs and desires of each individual student. Our school counselors work with students and families during every stage of the college search and application process to help find the best university for each student. Some recent college enrollments of our graduates include the Air Force Academy, Catholic University, Columbia University, Duke, James Madison, Liberty, the Naval Academy, Notre Dame, Tennessee, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, Vanderbilt, VMI, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and William and Mary.
  • What college counseling services are available?

First year Cadets and Gators explore career interests, develop goals for their future, and create a 4-year graduation plan in both one-on-one and group time with a counselor. All students in all years work with counselors to ensure they are taking challenging courses and other steps to help build a strong profile for college applications. Students spend a progressive amount of time with their counselor each year as they approach the college application process, utilizing additional resources such as a personality and strengths assessment and standardized test preparation. Workshops that cover topics such as finding the right college, understanding the application process, and how to apply for financial aid and scholarships are also available.

Additionally, counselors provide support in planning college visits and following a recruitment path for athletics including resources and guidance on NCAA eligibility. Students and their families are also given access to SCOIR, an online tool that assists with the college search, planning, and application process to make the whole process easier.
  • How many scholarships do your graduates typically receive toward college tuition?

This past year, both graduating classes from Benedictine and Saint Gertrude were each awarded just shy of $3.4 million in scholarship money.
  • How much of students's time is spent in the single-sex versus co-ed environment?

On average, 95% of a student’s school day is spent in the single sex environment. Co-ed classes are primarily offered when a high-level honors or world language course is offered at only one of the schools. For example, BCP may invite Saint Gertrude students to enroll in Latin classes at BCP since it is not offered at Saint Gertrude. The number of co-ed class sections vary from year to year. Co-ed courses for 2024 2025 include AP Chem, AP Calc BC, French (1,2,3,4), Latin (1,2,3, 5 AP), AP Comp Sci, AP Spanish, Honors Spanish 4, AP Physics, and AP Art History.

Special occasions and religious celebrations arise throughout the year that are celebrated with both schools. This strengthens our sense of community and the students’ bonds of side-by-side brotherhood and sisterhood. Specifically, Holy Days of Obligation masses, nativity performances, and the Stations of the Cross are co-ed. Other special events like our Annual Day of Service, the Parater Day of Giving, and all dances are also co-ed. The Saint Gertrude Sponsors (~20 students) attend all BCP Military events and the whole SGHS student body attends Sponsor's Day Review, a BCP military event held in honor of the SGHS Sponsors.
  • Why are some classes co-ed?

BCP and SGHS strategically offer courses in a co-ed environment in order to offer more classes and to achieve optimal class size for specialty curriculum such as some world language and advanced placement (AP) study. The student-to-teacher ratio remains low in these classes to provide for more in-depth coursework, productive class discussions, and great attention to each student. This is an example of how our unique structure of two schools on a single campus benefits students by pooling resources to offer more opportunities while maintaining our small class sizes.
  • Can my student select or opt out of co-ed classes?

Our counselors work with each student to develop a schedule that reflects his or her goals and interests, as well as meets graduation requirements. Since only AP and world language classes are offered in a co-ed setting and core classes are only offered in a single-sex environment, the ability to select courses by gender composition may be limited. However, all course selections are made on an individual basis and we will work to find the right mix for each student.
  • What BSoR campus resources are shared by both schools?

BCP and SGHS share the Office of College and Career Counseling and some facilities on the Benedictine Schools of Richmond Campus including the newly built McMurtrie-Reynolds Pavilion gymnasium, as well as a state-of-the-art weight room and multiple fields. This provides us more opportunities to expand and diversify campus amenities as student interests demand, and it allows us to more easily offer co-ed clubs including the hunt and conservation and theater clubs. Both schools also use the campus chapel and auditorium.
  • What is the school’s educational philosophy?

The Benedictine Schools of Richmond are single-sex, Catholic, college preparatory high schools, Saint Gertrude High School and Benedictine College Preparatory, co-located on the Benedictine Abbey campus. This unique coordinate program is founded on the mutual complementarity of women and men and the equal dignity of all human persons. We seek to form all students to be self-motivated learners and leaders in their vocations. We provide a common Catholic culture, steeped in Benedictine values, that promotes the education of the whole person -- body, mind and spirit. To view the full Educational Philosophy, click here.
  • Are BCP and SGHS accredited?

Both Benedictine and Saint Gertrude are individually accredited through the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.
