Donor Advised Funds

Estate and Planned Giving Donor-Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a charitable giving vehicle administered by a sponsoring organization where you can deposit assets for donations to charities over time. The donor gets a tax deduction for making contributions to the donor-advised fund while a sponsoring organization manages the account; the donor recommends how to invest the assets and where to donate them.

You can also create a lasting legacy by naming Benedictine College Preparatory and/or Saint Gertrude High School the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the fund. With a percentage, you can create a family legacy of giving by naming your loved ones as your successor to continue recommending grants to charitable organizations. Contact your fund administrator for a beneficiary form.

An example of how it works:

Bobby and Alice want to give back to meaningful causes by putting their money where it will do the best. They establish a $50,000 donor-advised fund with the local community foundation.

The couple receives a federal income tax charitable deduction for the amount of the gift. After researching community needs with the foundation’s staff, Bobby and Alice recommend grants for their alma maters (which they've supported for years) and the Cancer Fund. The foundation presents the charities with checks from the Diamond Fund, which Bobby and Alice named in honor of their daughter and son who graduated from Saint Gertrude High School and Benedictine College Preparatory. Bobby and Alice are excited to start this personal legacy of giving.
